"Foxy" Trolls and Amanda Hocking

I am not quite sure why I resisted reading an Amanda Hocking book until now. I actually picked up a hard copy of her biggest seller SWITCHED, at the airport in London last week. Ironic that she is known for selling ebooks and I didn't buy one? Uh, oui.

Anyway, I am not sure how to feel about the whole thing. On the one hand I am totally amazed and impressed at her success. She wrote 17 novels, got rejected over and over again, and found a way to succeed on her own terms. On the other hand, I can't help but read with a critical eye and feel somewhat underwhelmed.

Yet, the fact remains that she is a millionaire and she did something very, very right. I have done a little research on Miss Hocking, and I can't help like who she is. She seems very genuine and sweet. So despite any criticisms I may have about the actual writing in her books, I support her. I am a fan of her, even if I am not a huge fan of the books.

Have you read her books? How do you feel about them/her?

  1. I haven't read her books, but I do like that cover.
But more importantly.... we missed you at LTUE! I so wanted to meet you, but can't blame you for taking the trip! SO LUCKY! That would have been fun. Hopefully we'll find a conference or reason to meet up soon! :)

  2. I tried to read this actually, but I can't help being critical of the writing either--isn't that awful? I just couldn't get into it and sent it back to the library. What she's done is amazing, though!

  3. I read some of the reviews on goodreads and many people said they caught tons of mistakes. I'm assuming that was in her ebooks and now she'd probably got big editors to help with that. She'a got a mermaid book coming out, WAKE, so I plan on reading that.

  4. good for her. but it irks me when some do not follow the rules (pay for an editor!) that is my biggest fear of self pub (for me too!) she was lucky, especially if her writing is only so so. i believe some people are blessed with good fate, like snookie...ha!

  5. Tara, Snookie?! Haha!

I haven't read any of her books. But I do respect any and all authors who love writing and want to share their work.

  6. That cover is beautiful, but I haven't read any of her books. And I guess good for her for doing what she loves, no matter what.

  9. I read Switched. It's a total ripoff of Twilight. Awkward girl in high school...check...that's Bella. Troll dude falls in love with her...check that's Edward. Troll dude whisks her away to his super rich family...check. etc. etc. etc.

She stole her story from a successful author and just changed all the names and went troll instead of vampire.

But originality is not what the world wants. And she's made loads of shameless money. Who cares?! Right?

  11. I've read Hollowland, and I was also underwhelmed. Not enough character development for me. But if you are into action and little emotion, try it. To each there own I guess. I'm with you. You have to be impressed with her success.

  12. Hey Jessie,

Well you struck a chord with *this* post:)

And me too, I haven't read any AH books - and I probably won't now :)

But, we'll see... curiosity might get the better of me ;)

  13. I have read one of her books, which I won't go into. You can guess by the content of this post how I felt about it. :) I do admire her though. I think she seems like a very nice person and she has obviously had a ton of success. Maybe I'll like her new stuff. Who knows? :) And that cover is gorgeous!

  14. I read the first of her books as an ebook back before her big publishing deal. I enjoyed it, but my inner editor was having a field day in certain parts. Oh well. I'm happy for her nonetheless and love what's she's done for the ebook market.

  15. I haven't read any of her books, though I've heard so much about her big book deal. I wonder if it's hard to take edits when you've been used to being in charge of every step of every one of your books?

  16. I haven't read any of her books. I tried reading the first book in the Twilight series, but had to give it up. I won't even attempt Switched, etc.

  17. I probably wouldn't like the book itself (all YA books are pure trash), but that cover is perdy, perdy, perdy :)
