Writing and the Olympics

I don't know about you guys, but the start of the Olympics has been totally inspiring to me! The patriotism, the competition, even the commercials have given me goose bumps.

Every day,  I look forward to events that normally I'd never really care about. Like Synchronized Diving or Shooting Skeet. But because of the coverage and the back-stories NBC does on these athletes, every event is fascinating to me. Each athlete's road to the Olympics has been different, but in every case, it's involved tireless hard work, sacrifice and resolve.

And it made me think...how hard am I working toward achieving my dream of publication gold? Are my writing muscles as strong as those 1% body-fat gymnasts' muscles?

Let's just say I am inspired to do better. How about you? What's been your favorite Olympic story or event?

  1. Watching the Olympics has inspired me too. It's fun to introduce my children to so many sports and athletic events.

  2. My kids are swimmers so we're having so much fun watching the Olympic swim team and drooling over their streamlines.

  3. Gah, I miss the olympics. I guess not having TV just means I have more time to write instead of watching.

  4. Yes! Totally inspires me to do better. Gymnastics is one of my favorite events but I like the swimming and track events too. :)

And you can TOTALLY borrow my copy of Enclave! Want me to send it to ya? You'll love it!

  5. I cried during opening ceremonies, but I hid it well so my kids wouldn't make fun of me :) I hadn't thought of comparing Olympics to writing, very thought provoking. I love the drama of swimming. But I can't imagine training for years for only 50 seconds!

  6. What I love about the Olympics is watching my kids see different events for the first time. We let them stay up and watch the opening ceremonies. And yes, I think they are totally inspirational!

  7. All I can say is it takes posts like this to inspire me to get of my butt.... and sit on the couch to watch the Olympics. I'm ashamed to say I haven't even seen three seconds of it. :(

  8. Those have basically been my exact thoughts, too! The dedication is absolutely amazing. This is their whole life, it's just mind blowing to even think about. But definitely inspiring. :)

  9. i feel like i am average at everything.
there is always someone better...but i'm top 5 % in some things, so i should be able to beat those who dont try as hard as me, right?

    thanks for the motivation!

  10. Yes the dedication of the athletes is so inspiring. I love reading the stories of their lives. It makes it even more inspiring. Yes, I definitely could do better with my writing muscles.

  11. This is SO TRUE Jess! I LOVE watching the olympics. To be so good, to give up EVERYTHING for one thing makes me totally in awe of them. I could never do it, I like too many things. I give them so much credit.

  12. The short film with Bond and the Queen was awesome, too. I'll be watching all things water related and archery. Let the games begin! :)

  13. I loved the opening ceremonies and the Queen with Daniel Craig :) I've only seen bits and pieces of the events so far. The entire event is inspiring.

  14. I know! I look at these athletes who have worked so hard and come so far and it all comes down to this and I think wow, I really need to get off my butt and start working on my writing! I'm such a slacker! I love the gymnastics, of course!

  15. I can't believe how emotional I have been while watching! To see the winner's faces after they realize that all their hard work has paid off...Geez, I'm a mess.

  16. I love the Olympics! You're right. The games are so inspirational. :)

  17. I love the back stories of John Orozko and Danell Layva of the men's gymnastics team. One from the Bronx, and the other born in Cuba and raised in one of the poorest parts of Miami.

But, of course, I love the beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh Jennings. They'd never lost a set in the Olympics, until last night *ouch*, but went on to win the match! Go Misty and Kerry!

(Warning: Shamless plug alert!) To celebrate the Olympics I'm giving away the 1984 mini-series "The First Olympics: Athens 1896" on my website. Talk about inspiring! It's amazing everything that went into organizing the first Olympics of modern times, as well as finding and training the athletes.

  18. While the Olympics totally inspire me and get my creativity dancing (I now have a WIP based on international athletic challenges where the outcome is slightly more significant than bronze, silver or gold) the Olympics also glue me to my couch for hours where I get very little done in the department of writing or editing! :(

I gotta agree with you, the Olympics were so inspiring. I found myself watching the diving events even the water rafting. My hubby was teasing me for me. What a fun post.
