It Sucks. Fix It.

Ha ha, what a title for a blog post! It came to me yesterday when one of my favorite writing friends (who we shall call "Four" for convenience) sent me her query with that title as her email subject line.

But I think that "Four's" blunt call for help has a much deeper and symbolic meaning. I think quite often we create sucky stuff. I know I do. We can't always write lyrical, poetic, amazing literary brilliance. Sometimes we just suck! Plain and simple. And we need help fixing it. And that's okay!

That's why it's so important to have great writing friends. Who can help you turn your crap into something decent, something polished. So let's give ourselves permission to write terrible junk! In fact, I promise that today I will only write truly hellish, awful, pathetic garbage. I'll fix it tomorrow!

You with me?

  1. I love how Anne Lamott calls it the "shitty first draft". Well, ain't that the truth. Sometimes the second or third leave a little to be desired too. Yes, write with abandon. Just write.

  2. Oh. My. Gosh. I laughed so hard at the nickname mention! Great post. I wrote a lot of suckiness this weekend that I need to fix but I liked the premise of what I wrote. With some tweaking I will be happy. I can send stuff to you and Four if I need some help. :)

  5. I tell my students ALL THE TIME that we can fix crap. Really, I haven't seen anything that wasn't fixable - some more than others, but everything can be fixed. The key is to get the crap on paper.

  6. I have no shame when it comes to my first drafts. Sometimes I actually write some pretty decent things...but other times it's a total suck fest.

    I'm with you :D

  7. As Chad worked on his final galleys this weekend I heard him say more than once that it was crap. I don't think we ever get over the idea that it's crap and we need help fixing it. Maybe once it's out we just let go of the 'fix it' part. ;)

  8. I write junk every day. One of the greatest things about being a writer is we don't have to get it right the first time. We have time to fix it and turn that junk into a treasure!

  9. I love this! I cringe when I think back to my original drafts and jump for joy when I see how much better they are now as a result of my CPs.

  12. I am with you! Yeah, I can write crappy stuff too and then, it turns into something magical after a million edits. But I do admit, I hate the editing part of the writing process. And this is very true :)

  19. Exactly! And with the permission to suck, we can be as suckishly creative as possible. :)

  21. Thanks for this - I needed permission to write crappy stuff. :) No seriously, sometimes it's hard to let go of that editor in my head. But I keep telling myself "you can't fix a blank page!"

  23. I think this sums up how I very often feel about my writing. But I always figure, it's okay if it sucks. That's what the fix it part is for.
