What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (Everything. Is. Awesome)
  • __2__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (but one of those was a Red Bull consumed around midnight so it's really more like 10!)
  •    4    Hours of Writing (Book #2 edits due today)
  • __0  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (everyone ate left overs and no one was happy)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING- hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of submissions for the school district writing contest that I am sponsoring. Dang kids are smart! In celebration of the launch of my book, KILLING RUBY ROSE, I came up with the idea to get involved in the community and schools in a meaningful way. So I developed the Killer Storytelling Writing Contest and:

  •  pitched it to the school district,
  • got sponsorship from local businesses and some celebrity talent from my alma mater (creator/writer of CSI, Anthony Zuiker and Mark Stoermer of the band The Killers),
  • visited dozens of schools and thousands of students to promote the contest and teach writing workshops
  • throwing a huge party/Award Ceremony & Concert at a brand new Downtown venue called the Inspire Theater this Saturday night. (FYI: FRIENDS AND FAMILY GET YOUR TICKETS ASAP HERE).

WHAT I'M WRITING- Round 2 revisions for Ruby Rose #2. Due today! And it's not going to kill me or anything ;)

  • Everything. Everyone. So many people bending over backwards to help me and support me. I love everyone.

  • KILLING RUBY ROSE is still hanging in the top ten Bestselling Teen/Young Adult books--four weeks in a row!
  • The official release for KRR is only 1 days away! TOMORROW!!!! Years in the making and only days to wait.
  • I'm going on FOX 5 morning show tomorrow morning at 7:45 am. Tune in and watch me say more ridiculous things in public!

What's up with you?

Killer Monday: Ruby Rose The Original Song

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, April 28, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (Storymakers Writing Conference in Utah this last weekend, writing friends, coming home)
  • __3__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (it's go-time, baby! Book Launch in T-minus 3 days!)
  • __4 hrs  Spent Writing (round two edits of Ruby Rose #2 due in 2 days. Yes, awesome timing...I agree...NOT!)
  • _0__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (traveling home I called my dad to say, "Wanna come over for dinner?" He said, "Sure, what's on the menu?" And I said, "Ummm..." And he said, "Oh, I see... I'll stop and get some take-out." SCORE! He knows me all too well. #beggarchild)
Book Launch Update

You guys! You freaking guys! There are words...I wish had the right ones...To describe the ridiculous amount of awesomeness happening with the launch of my debut KILLING RUBY ROSE. Things are coming together in a way I never saw coming. Not only is the book trailer/short film done and ready to blow the world away, but now the original Ruby Rose song written and performed by Jackson Wilcox and his band A Crowd of Small Adventures is out of the studio as well.

For realz, the song is so epic. I would say the sound of it is something like this:

  • A Bit of U2
  • A dash of The Killers
  • A pop of Morrissey; and
  • A butt-load of awesome.
Here is my favorite part of the lyrics: (I can't reveal them all yet, but here's a teaser)

I comb the coast-roads
A gun inside my glovebox
And I want my father back
The man who taught me that
To take a life can save one

Also, the most killer part about this song is that it is going to come at you in many different ways:

  • Loud and in your face at the KILLING RUBY ROSE BOOK LAUNCH at the Container Park this Friday night, May 2nd, from 6:00-8:00 pm. (More information on this event can be found HERE)

  • Stripped down and sexy at the KILLER STORYTELLING WRITING CONTEST AWARD CEREMONY & CONCERT at the Inspire Theater Downtown this Saturday night, May 3rd from 6:00-8:00 pm. (Information on this event can be found HERE) This version will be an acoustic performance with only lead singer/guitarist Jackson Wilcox and violinist/pianist Megan Wingerter. (I have a man-crush on him and a girl-crush on her...not weird at all...)

  • Everywhere else, such as: iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon, etc. (After the book launch).
I can't wait!

Finally Friday: From the Storymakers Conference

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Friday, April 25, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (Hilton beds, new episodes of Game of Thrones waiting for me, hot tubbing before bed)
  • _2__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (after arriving in Utah at 11:00 pm and then waking up at 3:00 am to take lil' bro to the airport...its a wonder I made it through the day with just the two pick-me-ups)
  • __4 hours_ Spent Writing (it was awesome to have hours of uninterrupted writing time)
  • _0__ Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (but I had a roasted turkey sandwich on foccaccia from a Utah place called Kneaders--amazeballs)
Last weekend, I was in HB, California and it was hot, hot, hot...and not just because of these guys:

Can you see these guys just standing around in nude-colored g-strings on Main St?

Anyway, now I'm in Layton, Utah, and it's not exactly hot, hot, hot. I was wearing flip flops all day yesterday and it took some major hot tubbing for them to thaw out. It was like a bitter 60 degrees!!! ;)

But I'm still totally thrilled to be here for LDStorymakers 2014--my favorite writers conference in the world! Walking in to the conference center, hotel lobby, and dinner party last night was like coming home. These are my people. After 5 years of coming to this conference, I know hundreds of beautiful writers who I consider to be my besetest friends. I'm sure many FB and Instagram pics will be posted, but first I gots to get ready for the panel that I am not only appearing on, but moderating! Never done that before! Let's take bets on how badly I'll humiliate myself this time!

Have a great weekend!

What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (friends who deliver dinner to my family, new babies, getting' stuff done)
  • __0__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (seriously? Did that really happen?)
  •    0    Hours of Writing (Book #2 edits done)
  • __0  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (who needs it when neighbors bring you awesome dinners and stuff...)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING- contracts, emails, and production plans--for the book launch extravaganza.

WHAT I'M WRITING- contracts, emails, and production know.

  • Small miracles. A lot of days, things go abysmally wrong. And some days there's the small victories and miracles that make it all worth it.
  • Envisioning dreams. I find that when I take the time to see the future in a successful/positive way...things often go in that direction.

  • KILLING RUBY ROSE is still hanging in the top ten Bestselling Teen/Young Adult books--three weeks in a row!
  • The official release for KRR is only 8 days away! Years in the making and only days to wait.
  • I leave today for LDStorymakers Conference in Utah. I'm driving up with a friend and reading submissions from the Killer Storytelling Writing Contest on the way. It's gonna be an interesting drive!
  • I was able to see the book trailer/short film for Killing Ruby Rose yesterday for the first time. And oh. my. gosh. CHILLS! I can't wait to share.

What's up with you?

Killer Monday: Another Killer Storytelling Writing Contest Announcement

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, April 21, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (Easter chocolate, Easter egg hunts, and Easter vacations with family)
  • __4__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (revisions turned in at 1:50 am, several hours past due, so yeah...)
  • __12 hrs  Spent Writing (that may be an all-time record. Someone give me a new brain.)
  • _0__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (ha! I barely had time to use the bathroom, visit my sister in law who is in the hospital on bed rest due to pregnancy, watch the Easter egg hunt that my mom and husband helped out with, and snarf down a truck load of the aforementioned chocolate!)
Killer Storytelling Writing Contest Update

It just keeps getting better you guys.

So last week I announced that the winner of the one-page writing contest is not only going to win: 1) a laptop; 2) a laptop for their teacher/mentor; BUT ALSO 3) a Ruby Rose-designed guitar signed by members of the band The Killers.

Now I’m adding the cherry on top 4):

A visit to the set of CSI at CBS Studios in Los Angeles, and lunch with the show’s writer/creator, Anthony Zuiker (a Chaparral High School alum).***  Anthony was one of the inspirations for this contest, as he is one of the most successful writers to come out of the Clark County School District. He’s a talented, caring, and generous dude and I’m grateful for his support.

Okay, you can stop screaming and flailing around with excitement now!

The deadline is tomorrow people. Tuesday, April 22nd (at 5:00 for postmarked entries and midnight for emailed entries). So get to work if you haven’t already!

***Due to insurance and liability issues, this prize is not officially endorsed by the Clark County School District. It is considered a “supplementary prize” and therefore if the winner chooses to redeem this offer, he/she will indemnify and hold CCSD harmless for any activities associated therewith.

And in case you missed it, last week I was interviewed by Jessica Moore and Jim Snyder on NBC Channel 3 about the Killer Storytelling Writing Contest. It was a live in-studio interview and a total thrill! Here's a clip:

What's Up Wednesday: With An Announcement

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, April 16, 2014
  • __2__ Gratitudes (generous people, kind people)   1   Gripe (people from my own writing group who have accepted help from me and then go on Goodreads and Amazon and give me a terrible review, saying my book is a "fast-food book" and the characters "annoyed the hell" out of her. Yes, that happened. No more tea and biscuits for her. End gripe.)
  • __1__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (no wonder I'm griping!)
  •    4    Hours of Writing (Book #2 edits due on Friday! cue freak out!)
  • __1__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (hard boiled eggs. This is getting embarrassing...)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING- WORLD AFTER by Susan Ee, the sequel to ANGELFALL: Penryn & The End of Days, which was my favorite read of 2013. I actually read this book when it came out a few months back but I'm re-reading it because I think Susan handled the tricky-to-pull-off sequel like a pro! Susan is a fellow Skyscape/Amazon Children's Publishing author and attorney/author. So naturally we are going to be besties. But for reals, I really look up to Susan and will read anything this girl writes! She's amazing.

WHAT I'M WRITING- edits for book #2: RESISTING RUBY ROSE. There is a short turnaround time on these lots of long days and even longer nights. But those moments when you realize not everything that you write is crap...golden.

  • Make-out scenes. Seriously, they get me every time. I love to read them, write them, live them ;) hehe.

  • KILLING RUBY ROSE is still hanging in the top ten Bestselling Teen/Young Adult books--currently at #6. Still pinching myself.
  • I'm appearing on my local NBC station tonight (Channel 3) for a LIVE Primetime interview with anchors Jessica Moore and Jim Snyder. They'll be interviewing me about my book, my killer launch party on Friday May 2 (from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Container Park Downtown), and the Clark County School District "Killer Storytelling Writing Contest" Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 3 (from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Inspire Theater Downtown). I seriously hope I don't embarrass myself or family too bad.
  • I'm officially making a very exciting announcement:
My good friend and writing colleague, KATHRYN PURDIE, will be performing at the Killer Storytelling Awards Ceremony & Concert (mentioned above) on May 3rd. Many of you in the blogosphere already know Katie as one of the nicest, most genuine, and beautiful writers out there, but if you don't know her yet, this is Katie:

Katie is not only an extremely talented writer of books, but also of music. She will be performing a couple of original songs that she wrote for her young adult novels. Her performance will look a lot like the MTV Unplugged format (a more intimate and stripped-down experience), where the artist talks about the song before playing the H out of it. Kind of like this Unplugged video of Lauren Hill from back in the day:

How freaking cool is this going to be?!!! Along with Katie, lead singer/guitarist Jackson Wilcox and Megan Wingerter, violinist/pianist, from the band A Crowd Of Small Adventures will also be doing an unplugged performance. You know you want to come...

What's up with you?

Killer Monday: The Killer Storytelling Writing Contest Deadline Extended

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, April 14, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (spooning, cuddling, and canoodling...I'll leave it at that)
  • __4__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (revisions due...high alert...must have energy...robot replenishment)
  • __8 hrs  Spent Writing (like I said, revisions on Book #2 due!!!!!)
  • _1__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (microwaved chicken fingers...sad but true)
So this  School District Writing Contest that I dreamed up is really making waves! After three full weeks of daily presentations, over a dozen high schools, thousands of students, and one exhausted B-word, the interest and participation in the "Killer Storytelling Writing Contest" has blown me away. So much so that I am officially extending the deadline a few more days to ensure that the students who wish to participate can get back from Spring Break, share their writing with their teacher/mentors, and submit their entries on time. Originally I had set the deadline to Sunday, April 20th (Easter Sunday), but that will not do. The new extended deadline is Tuesday, April 22nd by midnight. I've been invited on to radio and TV shows in the valley to talk about the contest, and you better believe I'm gonna promote the heck out of this sucker.

I can't even explain the gratification and fulfillment I've received from interacting with the youth in the community. After every presentation, there was ALWAYS at least one student (if not a crowd) who would come up to me with stars in their eyes, hoping that they could write a story that meant something. It makes me want to cry, laugh, and rejoice that I might have had a positive effect on these kids' lives. What an experience!

Plus, I've upped the ante: the top winner not only wins 1- a laptop for themselves; 2- a laptop for the teacher they nominate in their submission; but I'm throwing in another killer prize:

A KILLING RUBY ROSE-designed guitar signed by members of the Vegas band, The Killers!

So, if  any of you readers out there in the internets ;) are high schoolers or have high school-aged children in the Clark County School District, please encourage them to write a first page of a story, (only 250 words), and submit it to Judy Myers via the CCSD Partnership Program at:
