It's Official Release Day!!! The Story of How It Happened (In Dumb & Dumber Gifs)

Once upon a time, there was a dreamer named Jessica Allison Coon Humphries, Esq., but people just called her Jessie...

(circa 1996 A.D.)

Jessie grew up to have a slew of children and a messy house...

so one day she got the crazy idea to write a book...

except, the book was truly sucky...

and even when others (friends, agents, editors) told her how truly sucky it was (like a one in a million chance of getting published), she still held on to hope...

so she pumped herself up and wrote another book...

but it was also sucky...

so Jessie got serious and wrote some more books...

until many years later... a big-time agent finally said, "Hey, this is a great book...let me sell it for you..."

and then an editor said, "I want to buy this book..and also the next book in the series..."

and Jessie wept tears of joy (almost threw up) and said, "Of course, I'll get right on top of writing the second book."

So the first book, KILLING RUBY ROSE, came out on April 1, 2014 as a Kindle First Pick...

Jessie had a killer launch party at the Container Park Downtown with an amazing turnout...

selling more copies than she ever dared hope for...

and the second book, RESISTING RUBY ROSE, released six months later...TODAY!!!

Jessie had another killer book launch at the Gold Spike Downtown...

And Jessie celebrated with food and was happy...

The end.

(Dang, maybe I still write sucky stories).

P.S. You can buy both books HERE.

Killer Monday: Killer Weekend Recap

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, October 20, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (supportive friends, loyal family, and generous fellow-authors)
  • __4__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (celebration beverages!)
  • __0 hrs  Spent Writing (24 hours spent recovering from crazy week)
  • _0__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (Roberto's Taco Shop for Sunday Brunch... so classy.)
So...this last week was CRAZY! Here's why:

  • Tuesday thru Friday was the SkYAuthors Tour, wherein me and my fellow ninja authors, Christina Farley, Lori M. Lee, and Meredith McCardle, travelled around Las Vegas and Southern Utah doing school events, bookstore signings, and general partying every minute of every day and every night.

Parowan High School
(It was like driving onto the set of Gilmore Girls. Parowan people: I love you! Especially the beautiful girl who ran home after our presentation to grab money so she could buy my book!)

Main Street Books, Cedar City, Utah
(Having fun answering some very entertaining questions about our books. Like, "What do you think you suck at when it comes to writing?" Good question! )

Northwest Career & Technical Academy
(I was so proud to show off this amazing campus, with incredible students and teachers to my East-coast friends)

Having lunch outside the Container Park where I had my first book launch.

I took the girls out to the Hoover Dam. Lori was just afraid as she looks in this pic!
  • Saturday day was spent speaking and signing at the Vegas Valley Book Festival, which was a spectacular event.

The Nevada Sesquicentennial Panel
(wherein NV authors talked about books and I said inappropriate things, per usual)

I got to sign books next to my gorgeous, Vegas-writer-bestie, Lindsey Leavitt.
  • Saturday night was my LAUNCH PARTY for the second book in the Ruby Rose Series, RESISTING RUBY ROSE, at the dynamic Downtown Project venue, Gold Spike. 'Twas killer!
It was also a costume party. My sister Julie was a tatted-up rock-star-girl (who strangely looks a lot like Brett Michaels sans beard), my bff Erin was 80's leopard-unitard-aerobics-girl (aka whore, haha),  and I was a pleather-panted-police officer (but the patch on my arm said "Babe Patrol"). Fun story: after the party. So to entertain my out-of-town guests, I started running over to break it up with my plastic nightstick, while hollering, "Stop, I'm Babe Patrol!" (as you do) when I realize someone has a gun... A REAL GUN! And then I hid and prayed no one at my book launch would die. Luckily, we all lived. Thank you, Las Vegas for being ridiculous.

My lil' bro, Jeff, came back from college to be there for me. Ladies, he's single and ready to mingle!

SkYAuthors partying it up once again.

My awesome friend, Allyson won the raffle giveaway for the Ruby Rose Kindle Paperwhite. She wins everything! Ten years ago, we went on a cruise and she won $1,000 playing bingo!!!

And now, I'm tired. So I'm gonna go take a nap now!

Thanks everyone for coming, sending well-wishes, buying my second book (which officially comes out October 28th), and otherwise being kind to me.

What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, October 8, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (cool weather, hoodies, being outside)
  • __3__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (happiness is my new Keurig)
  • __2 hrs  Spent Writing (er...writing-ish stuff)
  • _0__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (Panera Asian Salad is my new addiction. At least I got the kids oatmeal for breakfast and their lunches packed.)

Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

  • PitchWars mentee manuscripts. NEEDLE'S EYE by Mara Rutherford and THE DRAMA QUEEN WHO CRIED WOLF by Jocelyn Rish. So good. Both awesome reads for this Halloweeny time of year.
  • A bunch of other books I put down and meant to pick back up. Fall is my favorite time to read. Outside :)
  • The other night someone inspired an AMAZING new story that I'm going to write. It's in the brainstorming stage, but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to make it a picture book and have my daughter illustrate it. I can't say anything about it because it's in that "precious" stage where I don't want anyone to steal it, or touch it, or even look at it. GET AWAY FROM MY SHINY PRECIOUS!

  • Reading about all the new author deals going on. My agent has recently announced some incredible news about my agency sisters & bros landing sweet contracts with awesome editors/publishers. I know for some people this kind of stuff brings jealousy, but honestly for me it gives me so much hope! If they can do it, I can do it. We all can do it. And it will be hotdamnamazeballs for us too.

Planning and preparing for school visits promoting The Sky's The Limit Writing Contest (a national writing contest for grades 6-12) and the SkYAuthors Book Tour--Christina Farley, Meredith McCardle and Lori M. Lee are coming to Vegas and Utah for a bunch of events, such as:
  • MAIN STREET BOOKS, in Cedar City, Utah. Wednesday, October 15th, after Christina, Meredith, and Lori finish our school visits at Cedar High School and Canyon View High School, we're going to have a book signing party at Main Street Books (25 N Main St, Cedar City, UT 84720). UTAH PEEPS: If you live near Cedar, please come see us! There will be ice cream!
  • VEGAS VALLEY BOOK FESTIVAL on Saturday, October 18th. I'll be on the Sesquicentennial Panel for Nevada Authors at 10:00 am in the Young Adult Tent 2.
  • RESISTING RUBY ROSE Book Launch Party at the Gold Spike (217 Las Vegas Blvd.) also on Saturday, October 18th from 6:30-8:30 (after the Vegas Valley Book Festival is over).
What's up with you?

Silvern by Christina Farley

Some of you may recall a book I reviewed (and highly recommended) earlier in the year:

Well, I wasn't the only one who loved this book:

Praise for GILDED, the first book in the series:
“An amazing contemporary fantasy that explores the vast legends of Korea, this richly detailed novel kept me turning the pages well into the night. Jae Hwa starts off as a strong character and ends as a noble one, using both her brains and her brawn to win the day–she’s exactly the kind of girl YA literature needs.”
~from Beth Revis, NY Times Bestselling author of Across the Universe series

"Farley brings South Korea's fascinating culture and mythology into vivid detail in this shining debut, and Jae is a compelling heroine. An exotic, thrilling read, GILDED had me utterly entranced!"
~from Jessica Khoury, author of ORIGIN and VITRO

No wonder it sold like hot cakes! Well, now book #2 in the Gilded Series, SILVERN, is out and ready to be devoured by fans like me:

MY REVIEW: I loved this book! Christina is a master of weaving ancient mythology, Korean culture and history into a very contemporary book. I truly admire the way the story is told with such a mixture of educational and emotional depth. I guarantee you that I am smarter for having read these books. I've always had Korean friends in my life, but I've never appreciated the Korean culture more than after having read GILDED and SILVERN. From exotic food to breathtaking landscape, and from beautiful clothing to powerful Eastern spirituality, this book has such a wealth of diversity nuggets of gold. And yet, it's told from the viewpoint of a young teenage girl who manages to be charming, relatable, courageous and kick-A in every way. And in book 2, Jae Hwa needs all these skills because this time she's facing the most powerful immortals in all of Korea. I ORDER YOU ALL TO BUY THIS BOOK NOW! IT'S SO GOOD.

Full disclosure, I may be a bit biased because the beautiful Christina Farley is a great author friend of mine:

In fact, she's even coming to Las Vegas this month for the Vegas Valley Book Festival and to promote the national writing contest that we are hosting along with four of our author friends, Lori Lee, Meredith McCardle, Rysa Walker, and Chuck Wendig, called The Sky's The Limit Writing Contest (www.skyauthors.com). She'll even be at my big book launch party on Saturday, October 18th at the GOLD SPIKE from 6:30-8:30 if you'd like to buy her book then and get it signed.
