What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, July 30, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (other people's awesome pools, tooth fairy delighted kids, getting stuff checked of to-do lists)
  • __4__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (gotta stay hydrated!)
  • __1  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (homemade bean & cheese burritos--you know, with the kind of tortillas that you cook yourself. yum.)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING-
  • Beta-reading for a friend.
  • Re-reading WORLD AFTER by Susan EE. It's pretty rare that I re-read stuff, but sometimes it's nice to read with a more careful "writer's" eye.
  • Reading/studying the screenplay for HUNGER GAMES. Might be dabbling in this new kind of writing soon...

WHAT I'M WRITING-
  • Mostly legal documents. Been wearing the "white hat" this week. (haha, anyone get the SCANDAL reference?)

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW-
  • Writing and reading in beautiful places. I'm the kind of person that my environment, my surroundings, my feng shui really matters. I don't do well trying to write in a dark corner of my house with kids screaming at me that they're hungry again (five minutes after I just got done cleaning up my short order cookin' breakfast). Call me crazy but I prefer a quiet morning watching the sun rise over the Teton mountains. Or nice spot on the Pier when the sun is setting  over the Pacific. I love listening to the white noise of bustling pedestrians or the slow jamming of Jack Johnson in my earbuds. I love sipping on some lovely caffeinated beverage, nibbling on Chili Limon sunflower seeds, and enjoying a fresh breeze. That's what inspires me right now.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO-
  • I'm headed to SCBWI in L.A. this weekend. Actually leaving tonight to get there nice and early. Might have some of that inspiring writing time on the beach before the actual conference starts on Friday.
  • I finally watched ZERO DARK THIRTY and feeling all kinds of inspired by that bad-A chick Maya who never. gave. up. on her goal. Pretty inspiring stuff.
  • I've got a vlog tour going right now, where several videos about me or KILLING RUBY ROSE are roaming the internets/blogosphere. Today the stop is here: http://bookcrush.in/giveaways/killing-ruby-rose-jessie-humphries-vlog-tour-giveaway/

What's up with you?

Killer Monday: Things That Are Trying To Kill Me

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, July 28, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (clean laundry, fresh sheets, the smell of Tide...yes, I have a simple life)
  • __2__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (1 Diet Cokie for my soul and 1 Raspberry Tea for my lady parts)
  • __2 hrs  Spent Writing (read-through/2nd draft done)
  • _1__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (turkey dinner with roasted red potatoes, gravy and green beans)

So last week I posted some awesome pics of my adventurous summer vacations: shootin' guns, canoein', saddlin' up to bars in famous places, etc. We were in the mountains, going on hikes in the cool mountain air, having campfires under the bright mountain stars.

Well, that sh*$! is over...

This week consisted of several things that are trying to kill me: (here are the bullets)

  • 114 loads of laundry to wash and fold (slight exaggeration);
  • 114 bored children who can't go outside to play because they're bodies will fry like bacon (slight exaggeration);
  • 114 degree heat in this Iraqi desert called Las Vegas (no exaggeration AT ALL!); and
  • no new episodes of Game of Thrones for like ever....
What's the point of continuing on?!

Love,
Jessie Who Might Not Make It To August

What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, July 23, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (awesome publicists, beautiful views, coming home)
  • __2.5__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (I've decided that I'm not a fan of McD's Diet Coke...it's hard to explain, but there's this waxy aftertaste that I can't handle. Am I crazy?)
  • __1  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (oatmeal with chocolate chips was the highlight of the day...yeah, not quite a "delight")
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING-
  • Final Pass pages for Resisting Ruby Rose, Book 2 in the Ruby Rose Series. I actually love reading my story in a pdf like a reader. I don't suck all the time!

WHAT I'M WRITING-
  • I FINISHED drafting my French Contemporary YA! Gosh, that feels soooo good. Huzzah! It's not exactly a first draft at this point though since I didn't feel like I finish the last 20,000 words without revising the first 50,000. Anyway, now I'm revising the last bit, so it's more like a second draft. I gotta get it out to betas and CP's ASAP.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW-
  • Big ideas. Grandiose dreams. Unrealistic/improbable goal setting. Guess what? Sometimes those big ideas work, those grandiose dreams come true, and those unrealistic/improbable/asinine goals are achieved. I've got some of those cookin'...
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO-
  • I just got home from a 2 week road trip vacay spanning five states: Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming. While it was so fun, and the kids had the time of their lives hiking, swimming, fishing, roasting marshmallows, chasing cows, staying up to midnight, etc....it's so nice to be home. I have to soak it up though because we're off again to another state next week. While Mr. Humphries takes the kids to the beach, I'll be hanging out with my agent, writing friends, and other exciting people at SCBWI in L.A.

What's up with you?

Love,
Jessie

Killer Monday: A Killer Week (In Pics)

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, July 21, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (indoor pools at hotels, fresh air, early morning writing sessions)
  • __2__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (Virgin Passion Fruit Mojito from Cheesecake Factory...yum!)
  • __4 hrs  Spent Writing (PROGRESS!!!)
  • _1__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (sandwiches on fresh rolls)

This past week I was on vacay up in the Utah/Idaho/Wyoming regions. Since I'm tired from the whirlwind week of awesomeness, I'm going to post pictures to recap:

Shootin' my gun. Not exactly the Ruby Rose aim...

Canoeing on the pond.

Saddling up to the bar at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Literally "saddling up" because the bar stools are saddles :)

More to come.

Jessie

Killer Monday: A Killer Story

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, July 14, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (mountain air, tinfoil dinners, chocolate covered-cinamon bears)
  • __3__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (new fave: two parts Coke Zero-one part Diet Dr. Pepper)
  • __8 hrs  Spent Writing (THIS NEVER HAPPENS!)
  • _1__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (writing food: feta, tomato, & green onion dip on baguettes)

Every year my family goes on vacation to Eastern Idaho at the base of the Teton mountains. We love the Grand Teton mountain range so much that my dad named his labrador retriever "Teton." Not a totally weird name, right?

Wrong.

Fast forward a few years to when I just moved to France. One lovely evening in a town called Tours, I was walking down the street and saw a beautiful black lab. I stopped the owner and asked if I could pet his dog.
"Bien sur," he says. (Of course)
So I pet the dog and continue to make small talk with the owner. I tell him about the black lab my family has at home. He asks what his name is.
"Teton," I say.
Something along the lines of a gasp and a tisking sound escapes his mouth.
"Non, tu blague," he says, thinking I'm joking.
I blink innocently, totally not joking.
He switches to English. "You realize that you named your dog 'nipple' right?"

No, sir. No I did not.

And that is why I love the Tetons even more than I did before!

You're welcome.

Love,
Jessie T. Humphries

Finally Friday: Lip Sync Battle #5

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Friday, July 11, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (rainy days, pork chops, and French chocolate
  • _4__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (driving makes me bored...and thirsty)
  • __0 hours_ Spent Writing (traveling and writing do not mix)
  • _0__ Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (Taco Bell...Taco Hell...)
For many moons, my BFF (best freaking friend) and CP (critique partner), Erin Summerill, have been talking smack about having a Lip Sync Battle--inspired by our favorite movie, "Pitch Perfect" and Jimmy Fallon's epic battles on the Tonight Show. Well, we're done smack talking...and ready to start pitch slapping. This is week #5! And we're mixing it up with our Mini-Me versions of ourselves!

Here's my entry for this week:

What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, July 9, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (salted caramel cupcakes, organized closets, the anticipation of going on vacation--they say anticipation is better than the event. True?)
  • __3__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (those closets didn't get organized by themselves!)
  •   0    Hours of Writing (got sidetracked in the closets)
  • __0  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (Ramen and warmed up roast beef from Sunday dinner does not a delight make, but whatevs)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING-
  • GAMING FOR LOVE, a new adult romance by Crystal Perkins. Crystal is a B&N Manager, an organizer of the Vegas Valley Book Festival, and member of my Vegas writing group. She's also a great friend with excellent taste in cupcakes. Last night I was able to attend her launch party and it was fabulous.

WHAT I'M WRITING-
  • I've added a few more characters in this round of revisions and I'm writing some extra scenes for them. One of my favorite new characters is a lot like Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey, except for she's French. She may be grumpy and stuck in her ways, but always clever and funny. I'm having a ton of fun with her. There's also a part of her that reminds me of my own grandmother, who passed a few years ago. It's almost like spending time with her. :)

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW-
  • Creative opportunities. Turns out that this whole writing novels thing takes a butt-load of time and energy. I'm finding, however, that there are lots of ways to use a talent for writing. I won't say much about this quite yet, but let's just say I'm digging some ideas that have been presented to me.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO-
  • Last week I referenced one of my dreams coming true by being interviewed on NPR. The episode will air today!!! Sometime between 9:30-10:00 am (PST) and then will be rebroadcasted sometime between 8:30-9:00 pm (PST). The segment is called State of Nevada, so I'm fairly certain it will only be broadcasted here in Nevada, but you can always listen live via the internets. Here is the LINK.
  • I've almost hit 500 Amazon reviews for my debut KILLING RUBY ROSE, which came out April 1st. At the time of writing this post, the review count is 497--hopefully it'll hit 500 by the end of the day. I'm pretty stoked about that! Thank you so much to anyone and everyone who reviews. I appreciate the hell out of you!

What's up with you?

Love,
Jessie

Killer Monday: Gratitude Giveaway

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Monday, July 7, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (ice cream sandwiches, church, and hot baths--I know I say that a lot--baths, not church!)
  • __3__ Units of Caffeinated (or otherwise non-water) Beverages (what's life without a little liquid entertainment? Coconut tea with French Vanilla creamer whilst in the hot bath...Heaven!)
  • __2 hrs  Spent Writing (I gots me some writing on!)
  • _0__  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (I warmed up delicious bbq'd meats from Saturday however. Sounds disgusting...but whatevs.)

Over two years ago, before I landed my agent and book deal, I attended a conference in which I participated in a "Publication Primer." The setup was a group of six writers: one published Mentor/Leader and five unpublished writers, wherein we read each other's work and gave "constructive criticism." Our Mentor was Jenn Johansson. Jenn took me under her wing and gave me a much needed boost in confidence. I've never quite known how to repay her for her generosity and kindness.

Last weekend, I was able to see Jenn at the American Library Association's National Convention where she was signing her debut, INSOMNIA (her second book PARANOIA is also out). I felt like a bit of a schmuck waiting in line for her to sign a copy when they were meant for librarians, but I couldn't resist. She signed me a copy of her awesome horror book and I promised to promote it and give it away.

So this is me being grateful and paying it forward! All you have to do is comment to enter. Tweet it or FB it for an extra entry. (U.S. only contest...sorry Germans, I know how much you love this book!)

Happy Monday y'all.

Love,
Jessie

Finally Friday: Lip Sync Battle #4

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Friday, July 4, 2014 (Happy Independence Day U.S.A.)
  • __3__ Gratitudes (jumpy castles with water slides, bbq's, and hanging with friends and family)
  • _2__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (too hot for anything but water...It's 110 in Vegas!)
  • __0 hours_ Spent Writing (went to the Atomic Bomb Testing Museum with my favorite author from Amserdam, Corinne Duyvis, to the Bellagio Flower gardens, and then to the Vegas' AAA baseball game--the 51's. At 11:00 pm last night, as we were leaving the game, it was still 102 degrees outside!)
  • _2__ Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (lunch and breakfast with eggs. Kinda lame.)
This is week #4! The problem is that Erin is out of town this week and FAILED to compete. So...I guess I WIN by default!

Here's my entry for this week:

What's Up Wednesday

Jessie’s Bullets: Cock It and Pull It.

Wednesday, July 2, 2014
  • __3__ Gratitudes (enthusiastic reviews, making cupcakes with kidlets, binge watching Homeland)
  • __2__ Units of Caffeinated Beverages (had to put a tear in a root beer after USA losing yesterday in the World Cup)
  •    2    Hours of Writing (somehow between paying bills, organizing my desk, doing laundry, etc. I managed to write some words)
  • __2  Culinary Delights/Disasters Created With Own Hands (eggs & bacon for breakfast, and TCT's--Toasted Cheese Tortillas--for dinner. Nothing fancy, but yummy.)
Today, I'm participating in What's Up Wednesday- a weekly writing meme to stay in touch.

WHAT I'M READING-
  • FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell. I got it for FREE at ALA this last weekend (along with ELEANOR & PARK). I've only been able to read a bit of it so far, but I think it's right up my alley. In fact, I might even be able to use it as a comp to the book I'm hoping to sell by the end of the year.

WHAT I'M WRITING-
  • The "five part finale" of my French book. This is a fairly formulaic approach to writing (from SAVE THE CAT book 1 &2) but it REALLY HELPS! Because I've been seriously stuck on what to do. At least now I have some help working it out.

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW-
  • People who are willing to offer opportunities. Lately, I've been approached by so many people wanting to help me, get involved, present possibilities, etc. From writing friends, to professional acquaintances, to media producers, to my publishing team...so much generosity. I'm blown away by human kindness.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO-
  • This last weekend I attended the ALA (American Library Association) Convention in my home city of Las Vegas. It was so much fun to walk the floor and see my book, KILLING RUBY ROSE, being promoted to book buyers/librarians. Hanging out with my fellow authors and meeting great people in the publication/book industry was also a meaningful experience. I got to meet Laini Taylor, Becca Fitzpatrick, Jessica Love, and many more amazing people. For pics, see my Monday post HERE.
  • One of my life long dreams came true last week! I was interviewed on NPR! I freaking love NPR. The interview hasn't aired yet, but rest assured I will let everyone know when it does. The host asked me about the infamous Slate article written last month wherein young adult books were lambasted for "corrupting true literature." I think I had a fairly articulate answer...somewhere along the lines of, "Whoever said that is dumb!"  Just kidding. I actually have no idea what I said. I guess we shall see...

What's up with you?

Love,
Jessie
